A secure WordPress website is built through consistent maintenance rather than a single plugin. Use this checklist to reduce common risks and make recovery easier if something goes wrong.

Keep WordPress, themes and plugins updated

Apply security updates promptly after checking compatibility and taking a backup. Remove themes and plugins you no longer use, and download extensions only from sources you trust.

Use strong access controls

Give each person an individual account, use unique strong passwords and enable multi-factor authentication where available. Grant administrator access only to people who need it.

Maintain tested backups

Keep regular database and file backups in a separate location from the website. Test restoration periodically; a backup is useful only if it can be recovered.

Harden hosting and configuration

Use HTTPS, supported PHP and database versions, appropriate file permissions and a reputable hosting environment. Keep secrets out of public repositories and avoid sharing credentials in chat.

Monitor and prepare for incidents

Review logs, uptime and security alerts. If you suspect compromise, preserve evidence, restrict access, clean from a known-good baseline, rotate credentials and investigate the entry point—not just the visible symptom.

A realistic security routine

Create a monthly maintenance checklist and an urgent patch process. Security plugins can help, but they do not replace updates, backups, least-privilege access and incident response.
